AcademicTwitterpraisedthestudyforitscleverdesignandforthewayitresonatedwithprofessorswhohadstruggledwithactivelearning.Butevenasitwaslaudedinsomequarters,thestudywaspickedapartinothers.Itmeasuredtheeffectsofsinglelessons,somecomplained.Couldyoureallyconclude,othersasked,thatonetestwasatruemeasureoflearning?Theexperimentsaidnothingaboutlong-termretention,stillothercriticspointedout.Wouldthosedifferencesinscoresstillbeapparentmonthslater?
Thatmixedreactionilluminatesacentralparadoxinhighereducation.Scholarshiponteachingandlearninghasgrownexponentiallyoverthedecades,encompassingthousandsofexperiments,stacksofbooksandjournalarticles,andmajorinitiativestobringthescienceoflearningintotheclassroom.Yetmanyfacultymembersareuntouchedbythiswork,unsurehowtoapplyittotheirteaching,orskepticalofitsvalue.
Tobesure,manyinstructorshaveparticipatedinworkshopsrunbytheircampusteachingcenters.Andtheuseofsomeevidence-basedteachingpractices,suchaspeerlearningortheuseofclickerstokeepstudentsengagedintheclassroom,arefarmoreprevalentthantheywereagenerationago.Butfacultydevelopers,educationresearchers,andlearningscientistssaytheyoftenfeelliketheyarespeakingtoaselectaudience:namely,eachother,orthesamesubsetofprofessorseagertotrynewpractices.Andwhatdoesgetthroughtomanyfacultymembersandstudentsisoftengarbled,orjustonepieceofthepuzzle.
